A Hacker Con in the Bay Area
It is with our deep and sincere apology that we have to announce that BayThreat 2014 has been cancelled.
It has been the unanimous decision of the BayThreat Team to cancel this year’s event for reasons that have, on balance, threatened the quality of the event and the calibre of experience we have strived to deliver since BayThreat’s inaugural event in 2010. BayThreat 2014 would have marked our 5th year holding this conference and while we’re saddened to disappoint the community by not having it this year, we feel we’d have done a greater disservice if we had held the event and it not have been the best it could be.
For Our Sponsors: We value the relationships and involvement we’ve had over the years from our various Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Ruby sponsors and were excited to have already begun work this year with sponsors that hadn’t been a part of BayThreat before, but we would be poor custodians of your faith to proceed with this year’s event once we decided there was the possibility it might not achieve the standards we’ve set for ourselves.
For Our Speakers: We set a record this year with the number of respondents to our Call For Papers! We know there could be no BayThreat without the participation of the outstanding speakers and the engaging topics they’ve brought us this year and every previous year, but again we want your experience speaking at BayThreat to be a great one and we want to make sure everything is in place to make that happen for you.
For Our Volunteers: The BayThreat Team is at it’s core a small team of volunteers. We could not possibly hope to run an event like BayThreat without the dedication and cooperation of members of the community helping to make it happen. We need your participation but want you to have a great time in doing so. Jeopardizing that good will is not something we’re prepared to do.
For Our Attendees: We know we’re one of the rare security events that happens at the end of the year, and do not like the idea of having to call it off with the anticipation so many have for attending. This being our 5th year, we had lots in store, including a new venue, but we realized that if we couldn’t meet or exceed our own expectations that we’d certainly not live up to yours. We are aware that some of you have already made formal plans around this event, and we’re simultaneously elated at your enthusiasm for our event and deeply regretful of the inconvenience this may cause.
Please know that this is not a decision that we came to easily or lightly, and every effort was made to put on the conference that would live up to your expectations. The Bay Area has one of the best hacker scenes, and you deserve the best hacker cons. We won’t settle for anything less.
That’s all the information we have to share at this time, but please continue to follow @baythreat for announcements about future dates and plans. We thank you for your understanding.
